Creating a form for evaluation and feedback by next Monday. We will begin giving feedback after next Monday. Post your video on the discussion board with a link to your feedback form. Your feedback form may have anything you want in terms of specific questions you have (multiple choice, text answers, scales.... for instance "How well from a 1-5 do you think I held the attention of my audience" or "Give me some tips on how I could improve my delivery" I would expect a few of your own self developed questions. I am requiring you to have a general feedback box with paragraph text so I can give more extensive feedback. I will model this in class but remember you do not have to post your link until next Monday.

UnCommercial Modeling and Overview

A Few UnCommercial Resources

Classic Apple Ads

Extensive Political Ad Database

• The Ad Council’s Website

Archived TV Commericals

Parameters for UnCommercials

  1. The Project is more important than the product.
  2. Develop an UnCommercial Launch Page. This should "sell" the projects to students (and educators alike). A creative title and imagery can go a long way. I would recommend making this in Blogger so you have more options to embed. If you want to include a link chart, remember to use the old google doc format and copy and paste.

2. Your project page needs four definite elements. How you design this is up to you.

  • Clear steps which use visual and web resources to facilitate students in there progression through the making of the video.

  • I would imagine there is a data collection, or content piece. This should have a traditional literacy component such as notes, journaling, graphic organizing or essay writing (there are probably more). You should make these resources available through your in a sense "webquest". Upload journal outlines, graphic organizers or note to google doc and link away. Make the sites and materials you guide your students to have meaning and accountability.

  • Help your students transfer the data/content piece over to the genre you are having them work within. This may include a guided script, storyboarding or other planning means to facilitate not only the curricular goals but the necessary planning to produce a good product.

  • Help them narrow their need to find resources to layer with by providing them for them. Perhaps its freeplaymusic or a website with biology images, help sites for editing, or maybe specific models of works done professionally within the genre they are working. You are in charge of facilitating success.
  • Provide for a timeline for the planning, traditional literacy, filming, editing and screening.

  • Provide a strong rubric which focuses on both curricular goals as well as production/film techniques. Be sure to push multimodality and layering of varying modes in editing.
  • Include students in the assessment process if you think that would be powerful. Here is a sample assessment sheet that I have used when screening, this not only promotes conversations about aesthetics by also content and concept. Sample Student Assessment Guide

  • Be sure to highlight your own model in the process by embedding it within the project

7:45-9:15

Please either film or begin the layering of your website for your assignment. I would like to sit down with each of you and here your pitch and talk about your project.

"Homework"
  1. Prepare 3 questions you have regarding implementation of digital video into your classroom. They may be pragmatic questions or curricular/theoretical in nature. I truly want to address what you believe would be your roadblocks to making this methodology successful. Please send your questions to me by Sunday 7/17. You can do that by clicking here to open the form.
  2. Continue to gather resources for your instructional digital video. The plan is to screen on Monday, so you can rely on about another 60-90 minutes of class lab time. Download images, acquire music and sound effects, convert youtube videos, film..... Remember you can always use a google doc to save images and links if necessary.
  3. Read the following piece by Miller

Teacher Learning for New Times:Repurposing New Multimodal Literacies and Digital Video Composing for Schools

You can see City Voices, City Visions in action by visiting their site.

There is a discussion board with some leading questions I would like you to address. Please read and post by Saturday on the UBLearns page. Thank you.

What is Literacy?

James
To me, literacy boils down to one thing: function.

Matt
The article speaks to my definition (of literacy) because the article's over-arching idea explains that students acquire knowledge in their natural setting.

Jeff
The implication from this is that a good classroom is a place in which students are doing work more than they are receiving direct instruction from the teacher, and that the work being done is valued by the students.

Keith

Social Studies Guide to DV Integration
The Conductor Analogy

Conductor
Facilitator of Learning
Uses his/her baton to keep the orchestra in tempo. For the conductor its all about keeping rhythm and timing.
My voice becomes my baton. Students are constantly being made aware of how much time is left. When a group is given a camera, they are told ten minutes. If a computer is taking too long to perform an operation, I will make the critical decision to reboot. The class is constantly kept in forward motion.
Uses different parts of the orchestra according to its strength. Brass is used to generate anger while flutes are used to provoke a whimsical feeling.
Encourages student strengths. Visual learners are quickly identified and encouraged to take on filming while another group member is gently nudged into the editing process. Students with attention deficit challenges are encourage to act as actors and camera operators during times of lull.
Has to solve individual player problems. If a flute player is out of tune, a remedy must be found or the orchestra does not play properly. Cannot become consumed with individual difficulties as the orchestra never stops playing.
Has to solve individual student problems. Perhaps the most difficult job, being there in the time of need. Getting caught up in a problem which students can solve themselves is a dangerous pitfall. Fairness can be negotiable as some groups may be told to "figure it out" in order to attack a more pressing student problem. Rather than giving answers, a multitude of possible solutions should be offered. Careful observation must be always be looking out for fatal errors. A student filming an interview against a window will be met with a yell across the room, "Light behind guys! Light behind!" The process is messy and at times loud but it necessary.

Shares a passion with the performers to create something larger than themselves.
Everyone in the room is devoted to producing works of excellence. There is sense of professionalism and shared determination to get the job done. This atmosphere of authenticity allows for me to brush off some students in order address more pressing needs. The students understand my actions and make the appropriate reaction.

THE THIEF

JUNE 29th, 2011

1. Please fill out attendance. Please be sure to use FIREFOX as your browser.
2. Create THREE Blogs off your homepage. One for DV Resources (this link may help once you've made it) , one for DV Projects and one for Academic Resources. You need only title these websites, we will be filling them in as we progress through the course.
3. Once you create a page, be sure to change the date of the post, copy the link and create a link off your homepage. We will create the alignment together using google docs.
4. DV IN AN HOUR. Creating a short film to learn the basics of film.
5. Planning for our first DV Project. Overview of DV options (archive/personal/green screen).
6. What is Literacy?

For Monday's Class.
1. Complete the Discussion Board after reading the posted piece by James Paul Gee, "What is Literacy"?
2. Take/Acquire ALL of the media you will need to make your DV in class. The DV must be made IN CLASS. Consider the following choices you need to ponder...............

  • are you going beyond the written words you are saying to create some type of larger context of meaning. easier said then done but I hope we are all comfortable with our ideas by the end of class.
  • music, voiceovers and sound effects. you can record any audio you want to use right through your camera, just aim and speak clearly.
  • collect your archive video at home and bring it in a thumb drive. you can download realplayer and it will automatically allow you to download any video you are watching online. you can then simply hit the convert button and make it into an acceptable imovie friendly file (use any of the mac options).
  • I am hoping much of your film is created with your cams so have fun and be creative, there is no need to always "film what you are saying"..... create a narrative around the words with your shots and remember the rules we learned in class (which may be broken if done on purpose) Length, camera depth, lighting, sound, stillness and changing of frames......
  • we will work on it next week but consider your layering options in imovie including: speed manipulation, black and white, transitions, green screen (must be shot on green screen), pic in pic and split screen.
  • remember the goal is to have a finished product at the end of class Monday!

JUNE 27th, 2011
